Binsar - A Window to the Himalayas

If you plan to visit the Himalayas during your India tour, Binsar ought to be one of the stops. Located at 2412-metre or 8000ft in the Himalayan Mountain Range, Binsar has straight views of the Indian Himalayan ranges with peaks like the Nandadevi, Panchacholi, Trishul etc. Binsar is unlike many other hill stations you find on any custom tour in India.

History

Located in the Kumaon region of the state of Uttarakhand, Binsar was the summer capital of the Chand Kings from the 11th to 18th century. It was a focal point for the local people from far-flung villages who came to pay homage to Bineshwar Mahadev, a temple dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva. This temple was the root for the name of the region.

Binsar is also home to the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which was established in 1988 to conserve and protect the broad leaf oak forest of the Central Himalayan region. The sanctuary's claim to fame is the profusion of over 200 bird species that have made it their home and also the elusive Himalayan Leopard.

Things to do

As with any hill station in the Himalayas and on any Uttarakhand Tour, the main attraction is the mountains and the weather. On the highest point in Binsar you can experience the majestic span of the Himalayan Mountains.

A trek to Zero Point gives you a 300 kilometre panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and Kedarnath, Shivling, Trisul, Nanda Kot, Panchchuli, and the second highest peak in India, Nanda Devi.

Binsar is all about dense forests, tranquil surroundings, and the opportunity to enjoy fresh air. The Jhandi Dhar or the Binsar Hills makes a perfect place to get away from the maddening crowds of city life and lets you relax and rejuvenate.
