The Hill Fort of Jaisal or Jaisalmer city lies in the Thar Desert surrounded by yellowish sandstone and beautifully sculpted Jain temples. This Golden City was named after Rajput king Maharawal Jaisal Singh and is famous for camel safaris, havelis and Kalbelia dances. You won't regret adding this location to your custom tour in India.
Jaisalmer was founded way back in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal and was a popular halting point for camel caravans that travelled along the trade route. It wasn't an easy target for foreign rulers due to its strategic desert location. During the 13th century, the city went through a siege which was instigated by the Turk-Afghan ruler Ala-ud-din Khilji and continued for the next nine years.
Jaisalmer continued to grow right through the 17th century which was considered as its Golden Age. Under the British Raj, it was ruled by the Bhati clan of Rajputs but soon its glory faded as Mumbai became a focal point for trade. A visit to Jaisalmer during your India tour will introduce you to a history as rich as and vibrant as the country itself.
